8 reasons why solo female travel is life changing
Hi there! Are you a woman who has access to travel? There are many reasons why a person would never travel alone, such as cultural, religious, financial, or health-related reasons. If you are not affected by any of those, what’s stopping you?
Let me convince you with 8 reasons.
1. It literally saved my life
This is how powerful solo travel can be to someone’s life. It literally saved me. When I was 18, I planned to commit suicide by traveling alone to Australia. I thought traveling alone was so dangerous, that I would die anyway. Instead, it taught me how to want to live.
I learned that the world is much less dangerous than what society wants us to believe.
I learned that I was capable of being independent.
I learned that I could overcome any hardships, even my mental health issues.
All the beauty in life, made me want to live.
2. You are guaranteed to gain confidence
Haven’t we all asked this question before? How to gain more confidence?
Look no further. Just travel alone! Instead of investing in books and workshops, just leave your house! Get out of your comfort zone! Confidence comes when you are more certain of yourself. Solo travel is packed with new experiences and struggles (if you are lucky!) that you have to navigate on your own.
Lacking the confidence to socialize? Without a companion to keep you occupied, you naturally will come across opportunities to interact with others that you cannot avoid!
3. You learn to overcome fears
a.k.a. Your first step to becoming a fearless bada$$
Fear is what stops us from doing anything in life. The best way to overcome it is to do what you are afraid of. It’s possible to train ourselves to become better at overcoming fears. When you step out of the door and overcome that fear of traveling alone – you start a chain effect. The next fear you want to conquer does not look so scary anymore.
I know so many women who finally ask for that job promotion or change career because they found the courage while traveling alone.
4. You have access to a special side of the world
This is especially true when you travel to places where women are more conservative and don’t interact with male strangers. I have been able to see women who are usually veiled, to join the cooking, to join dance parties, and so on. Most importantly, being able to talk and spend time with those women, allowed me the precious gateway to a side of the world, that most men simply will never have access to!
5. The feeling of liberation and freedom
How many times in your life have you actually felt liberated? If you have already, I don’t need to say anymore. There’s no way you wouldn’t want to feel it again.
If you haven’t, I can guarantee you that there’s no better feeling. To travel alone, we defy what we have been told our whole lives. We are getting out of the cage that society put us in to “protect” us. Ladies, it’s time to free ourselves. I’m pretty sure the chance of you getting hit by a car is higher than getting in serious danger while traveling alone.
6. You help fight gender inequality/ debunk the myth that it is dangerous for women to travel alone
I envision a world where no one is surprised when a woman travels alone. Violence against women happens everywhere in the world. So, why is it more dangerous when we are in a different place?
Men are much less likely to be told not to travel alone. Sh!t happens to solo travellers if they are lucky - regardless of gender. Let’s stop propagating the idea that women are weaker and less capable of setting out into the world. You can help fight this inequality - by setting an example.
7. You learn life skills!
What are life skills? Here are a few examples:
- the way your gut feelings tell you when something/someone is dodgy.
- How to make decisions quickly when you encounter difficult situations.
- How to say no
- How to get what you want by persisting and strategizing
- How to take care of yourself when there’s no one else looking out for you!
8. Become an independent woman
When you change the way you see yourself, you change the way you expect others to treat you. When you know you can be independent, you begin living a life of an independent woman. You do not stay in relationships that do not serve you. You are your own boss and let no one boss you around. You go for your ambitions. You live life, on your own terms.
Every woman I know (including myself) tries solo travel once and never goes back! Travel has never felt so good! All the opportunities to grow and doors that open are something we are now graciously addicted to!
Go. Just GO! Have a taste of freedom!
Remember: traveling, in general, have risks of course. Do your own research and take care. The longer and more adventurous your solo travel are, the more impactful it will be!
